Like the lobster squealing when Mr. Moneybags orders the surf 'n' turf, Seattle is gasping for any shot of keeping the Sonics in town. Working with the state Legislature has been a failure, trying to move to the suburbs was a failure... the whole franchise is just kind-of in failure mode at this point. But according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer's Gary Washburn, salvation could come from... Washington's Muckleshoot Tribe:
According to two sources, there has been conversation between Bennett and the tribe about an arena on land the Muckleshoots own near Renton.According to its website, the tribe has been living in the Puget Sound area since the last Ice Age. (Puts the Sonics' 1968 birthdate in perspective.) And unless you're from an area devoid of Native American culture, you won't be surprised to know the Muckleshoots have a casino. No evidence of a sportsbook at said casino, however, which would avoid any Stern-related qualms there.
This is a longshot. Just like that delicious lobster, there will be some last-minute thrashing with deals to build an arena on Indian reservations or on a barge or in the mountainside... this thrashing will happen all the way up until Clay Bennett pulls out his sharp metal skewer. Seattle needs to hope for a miracle.
