Good catch by Fanblogs on this lead buried way, way down in a San Antonio newspaper article: Here's a rule that several coaches are pushing that has some merit. How about providing football players the ability to return to school if they are dissatisfied with their draft prospects – much like in college basketball? If players don't sign with an agent, they could be able to return to college for another season in any sport.Darius Walker is silently nodding his head at this very moment. It's an interesting idea. I've always thought the NCAA should be laxer about the draft and allow kids to return even if they do get chosen as long as they don't sign a contract, much like what they do in college hockey.
The difference there is that the NHL just declares everyone draft eligible at a certain age whether they would like to wait or not, but until a few years ago they would strip your eligibility if you "opted in" a year before the mandatory age, which had the net effect of driving a few highly touted players to Canadian junior. Now that they've changed it, as long as you don't sign with an agent or sign a contract you can be drafted and maintain your eligibility. What's the logic for refusing to extend that courtesy to other sports?
