Bill Parcells used to lie about being retired. It was the strangest thing: After he left the Jets, he'd swear up and down that he was never going to coach again, even though everyone who knew anything about him knew he was lying. And then he agreed to coach the Cowboys. If you know anything about Parcells, you know he'll have the coaching bug until the day he dies. So it's nice to see that Parcells isn't lying anymore. He said this in a USA Today Q&A:
Q. Are you definitely done with coaching, and would you consider coming back as a general manager? So Parcells won't be a general manager, but he acknowledges that he's not done with coaching. And it sounds like he's open to coaching in college as well. That might be the best place for him. A lot of people don't realize that Parcells' first head-coaching job was at Air Force in 1978. Maybe his last coaching job will be in college, too. And maybe he'll finally look like he enjoys what he's doing.
A. No and no. I've been doing this since 1964. Do the math. There are guys - and I pay tribute to them, Bobby Bowden, Joe Paterno - who keep going forward. I think college football is a little different than professional. It's more games and a longer season in the pros. I'm 65 years old. I've been doing it a long time.
