The whole mixed martial arts vs. boxing argument is rather silly, as I think most people who like one sport also like the other (I know I do). But it must be said that most of the time when the argument plays out in the media, the backers of mixed martial arts come away sounding a lot more reasonable. The latest example: ESPN's Brian Kenny just moderated a brief debate between boxing promoter Lou DiBella (pictured) and Ultimate Fighting Championship commentator Joe Rogan. And here's the oh-so-original comment DiBella had about UFC: "It's sort of like human cockfighting, in my view."
Yes, DiBella played the old "human cockfighting" card, uttering the idiotic phrase that was used by John McCain in his Quixotic effort to ban mixed martial arts.
Rogan was by far the more articulate of the two, calling boxing "a beautiful sport" but adding that he prefers mixed martial arts. Watching the debate, I couldn't help but think that while Saturday night's UFC 71 event won't be as big a deal as the Oscar De La Hoya-Floyd Mayweather fight, 2007 might just be the last year that the biggest boxing match attracts more fans than the biggest mixed martial arts match.
