Many thought it curious when Rockies demoted closer Brian Fuentes was picked by Tony La Russa to make the National League All-Star team, despite having the closer role temporarily taken away from him due to recent struggles. I wouldn't be surprised if some of you out there were secretly hoping that Fuentes would, all of a sudden, have an injury crop up on him so that another more deserving candidate could go to the game in his place (not that you were wishing pain on Fuentes, just for him to "need some rest", I get it). If you were one of those people, you got your wish ... Fuentes will miss the All-Star game with a back injury.Fuentes said he felt discomfort in the left latissimus dorsi after some mop-up work at Houston on Sunday and was extra sore after his scoreless inning of work Tuesday night against the New York Mets at Coors Field. So get your snubs ready and start rooting for your favorite to be named in Fuentes' place.
"I thought I'd give it a day and I came back the next day and it was still sore," Fuentes said Friday night. "So, we're just day-to-day right now."
He said the injury wasn't related to his poor performance on the Rockies' trip. "No, it had nothing to do with that," he said.
I smell office pool.
