NBCs' Wimbledon TV ratings were up this year, which qualifies as news for the simple reason that, as we heard over and over and over again during the NBA and NHL playoffs, sports TV ratings in general are down. The reason the ratings are up is worth exploring. The ratings for the women's final were up 27 percent from 2006, and it's obvious why: An American, Venus Williams, won. Americans will watch an American win in any sport. Last year's final had no American.
But the ratings for the men's final were up 10 percent from 2006, even though it was the same two non-Americans, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, in the final. The reason, I think, is that American fans are finally starting to realize that in Federer, we have an athlete for the ages playing tennis right now. He might be the best ever to play the sport, and yet he could probably walk through a lot of American shopping malls without anyone bothering him. These TV ratings are an indication that that's starting to change.
