Judge Assigned to Michael Vick Dog Fighting Case 'Rarely Grants Defendants Leniency'

The Virginian-Pilot has a profile of the judge assigned to the Michael Vick dog fighting case, and the news generally doesn't sound good for the Falcons quarterback.

Vick will face a tough, fair federal judge as he defends himself against dogfighting charges and will not get special treatment because of his status as an NFL star, legal experts said Wednesday.

U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson, a Bush appointee assigned to the Vick case, is known in legal circles as a jurist who rarely grants defendants leniency and who also rarely sees his cases overturned on appeal.

For Vick, the most noteworthy part of the article may be that Hudson is likely to set a trial date of about four months from now, and he will not consider a delay until after the NFL season. That means that Vick might have to be in court in Virginia, missing practice, every day of December. It's hard to imagine a quarterback playing on Sundays if he hasn't been practicing with his team.
