Former Cowboys running back and current ESPN commentator Emmitt Smith made comments over the weekend in which he seemed to imply that he didn't think dog fighting was a big deal, and that he thought the federal government was going after Michael Vick to get to others, not because they had a good case against Vick himself.Smith faced criticism for that, and this afternoon he released a statement, via ESPN:
I hope to clarify some comments I made about the Vick case when I was asked Saturday while doing interviews for the College Football Hall of Fame. Most importantly, I want to make it very clear that I'm completely against all aspects of dog fighting. It's illegal and vicious. With that said, I don't know all the legal specifics, so I realize that I need to be very mindful not to speculate on that aspect of the case.Smith's harshest critic was Peter King of Sports Illustrated, who ripped his comments as "idiotic."
