A-Rod Hit His 500th (Maybe)!

A big tip of the hat goes to Tim Kurkjian who was filling in today for Golic on Mike and Mike in the Morning and gave us this great nugget. Turns out, the home run Alex Rodriguez hit against the Royals in Kansas City on Wednesday may have been his 500th home run, even though it's currently being counted as his 499th. Let me explain.

If A-Rod fails to homer in the finale of the series with the Royals tonight, he'll be sitting on 499 home runs entering the three-game series with Baltimore. Funny thing is, prior to Friday night's game against the Orioles (I believe), a rain-delayed game from June will be resumed. In that game, the Yankees are winning 8-6 with two outs in the top of the 8th. Hideki Matsui will be up with a man on second, two out, and Alex Rodriguez on deck. This means A-Rod will no doubt get at least one more at-bat in the game.

Here's the tricky part: should A-Rod go yard in the continued game, his home run would go in his June 29th game log, and count towards his June stats. Even though he's already at 35 home runs on the year, and 499 for his career, a home run hit in the continued game would be his 29th of the year, and 493rd of his career. That means Alex Rodriguez, in some roundabout way, could have already hit his 500th home run. Crazy isn't it?
