On Deck is FanHouse's look at the day's most intriguing baseball matchups

New York Yankees (72-59) vs. Boston Red Sox (80-51)-7:05PM Est.

I know that for any of us who don't live in the northeast, we're tired of being force fed the greatness of the Red Sox/Yankees rivalry. Yeah, we know, you both hate each other. We get it. Still, tonight's game starts a very important series for both teams. The Yankees had made a charge all the way from 14.5 games back of Boston to four games back as recently as August 19th. Since then though, the Yankees have struggled and Boston's been hot. Now New York finds itself 8 games behind the Red Sox, so the six games they have left against them are huge. If the Yankees lose this series, I think it's safe to say they won't catch Boston. Hell, I think that now, but it would make it official. Daisuke Matsuzaka starts for the Red Sox, and he's looking to avoid a three-game losing streak. Against the Yankees, Dice-K is 2-0 with a 6.29 ERA. Andy Pettite goes for the Yankees, and he'll be facing a Boston team that scored like 95 runs in four games against the White Sox this last weekend.

Chicago Cubs (66-63) vs. Milwaukee Brewers (65-65)-8:05PM Est.

I think it's safe to say this is the biggest series either of these two teams have played in a long, long time. It took the Cubs five months, but they've finally surpassed the Brewers in the NL Central. They've got themselves a 1.5 game lead, and could put the Brewers another few inches down in their grave with a big series at Wrigley. They'll already be getting a big boost to their offense when Alfonso Soriano returns to the lineup tonight. Rich Hill starts for the Cubs, and he is severely lacking in run support this season. Hill has only given up more than two runs twice in his last six starts, yet is only 2-1 in that span. He's 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA against the Brewers this season, but has an ERA of 8.38 against them in two starts at Wrigley. Jeff Suppan goes for Milwaukee, and he hasn't won a game since June 11th. It shouldn't be very easy to come by tonight either, seeing as how Derrek Lee is hitting .455 off of him in his career.

San Diego Padres (71-59) vs. Arizona Diamondbacks (74-58)-10:05PM Est.

The Padres rode another strong performance from Jake Peavy to a victory over Arizona last night, and they look to get even closer to the division leaders tonight. A win tonight, and the Padres will be only a game behind the young Diamondbacks. There's just one small problem. Arizona's Jake Peavy starts tonight, Brandon Webb. All Webb's done lately is win his last six starts-including three shutouts-and finish 17 innings shy of Orel Hershiser's record for consecutive scoreless innings. He also has an ERA of 1.88 in four starts against the Padres this season, though he's only 1-1 in those starts. All of which means the DBacks will have to put up some runs against Justin Germano this evening. That shouldn't be too hard seeing as how Germano is 0-4 with a 5.54 ERA in his last seven starts.
