On Deck is FanHouse's look at the day's most intriguing baseball matchups
New York Mets (82-61) vs. Atlanta Braves (73-71)-7:05PM Est.
It wasn't too long ago that the Mets were barely holding on in the NL East. They'd just been swept by the Phillies, and it looked as if everything was falling apart around them. Now? Now they've won 9 of their last 10 games, they finally have a healthy starting rotation, and they're about ready to drive the final nails into Atlanta and Philly's coffins. With the start of a three game series tonight against Atlanta, the Mets have a chance to knock them out of the race for good. Orlando Hernandez will start for the Mets tonight after skipping his last start with a sore foot. That's good for the Mets because Hernandez is 6-1 since June 29th, and the Mets are 10-2 in his starts. The Braves counter with Buddy Carlyle. Carlyle has struggled lately, losing three of his last four starts. He only lasted 1.1 innings in his last start against Philadelphia, and has been giving up home runs at an alarming rate lately. All of which is only sure to get worse against the Mets lineup.
Los Angeles Dodgers (75-68) vs. San Diego Padres (77-65)-10:10PM Est.
If the Dodgers are going to make a final push for a playoff berth, tonight would be a great time to start. They play their next six games at home against the Padres and Diamondbacks, the two teams ahead of them in the NL West. The Dodgers are six games behind Arizona for the division lead, but trail San Diego by only 2.5 games in the wild card. Esteban Loaiza starts for the Dodgers, and though he's had three quality starts for the Dodgers, they're going to need more than quality tonight. They're going to need brilliance. Why? Because Jake Peavy is starting for the Padres, and he's dominated the Dodgers in his career. Jake has started against the Dodgers 17 times in his career, and he's 8-1 with a 2.28 ERA in those games. He's also won his last seven decisions against, with his last loss coming back in September of 2003.
Detroit Tigers (78-66) vs. Texas Rangers (68-74)-1:05PM Est.
The Tigers find themselves in a situation similar to that of the Dodgers. They trail New York by three games in the wild card race, and if they're going to make the playoffs, they'll need to get on a run soon. Why not today? A doubleheader at home against a bad team seems as good a place to start as any. The problem is, how many Tigers will still be standing this afternoon? The teams already dealing with the possibility of losing Jeremy Bonderman for the season, and Ivan Rodriguez had to leave yesterday's comeback victory in the third inning because he was dizzy. Game 1's starters will be Chad Durbin for the Tigers and Vicente Padilla for Texas. Game 2 is Jair Jurrjens for Detroit, and Brandon McCarthy for the Rangers.
