Bears defensive tackle Tommie Harris has been fined $5,000 for grabbing Chiefs quarterback Damon Huard by the facemask in last week's 20-10 Bears victory.
It's a surprising decision for the league, as players are hardly ever fined for facemasking penalties. But it's also the right decision. Facemasking can result in serious injuries, and if giving players a financial incentive to let go when their hand slips up there, that's a good thing. If anything, in a league where you can get fined $7,500 for pretending the football is a video camera, a $5,000 fine for facemasking seems light.
Harris, by the way, is off to an excellent start this season. He's got two sacks and he's been flying all over the field, showing no ill-effects of the hamstring injury that ended his season prematurely last year.
