To get you ready for Week 6, FanHouse is previewing all of this week's NFL games. Here is the St. Louis Rams/Baltimore Ravens preview. 2007 Record:
St. Louis Rams: 0-5 (4th in NFC West)
Baltimore Ravens: 3-2 (2nd in AFC North)
Last Week:
Cardinals 34, Rams 31
Ravens 9, 49ers 7
When the Rams have the ball: Marc Bulger is the superior quarterback, but Gus Frerotte has one thing on him -- knowledge of Scott Linehan's no-huddle offense. Linehan utilized it often with the Vikings and Dolphins, but in a little over a season Bulger has yet to fully grasp it, restricting the ability to use it. With Frerotte at the helm, however, the Rams can open the playbook. Injuries continue to mount, as the team will be shorthanded at receiver, but new slot receiver Marques Hagans and Frerotte have chemistry, and the team moved the ball much better last week than they have at any point with Bulger under center this season. With the Ravens only allowing 66 yards on the ground per week, and Steven Jackson still out, the no-huddle will be a good way to keep the Ravens on their toes.
When the Ravens have the ball: Steve McNair is a game-time decision with a stiff back, but (and I never thought I'd type this) Ravens fans might actually want to look forward to some Kyle Time. Kyle Boller has a higher quarterback rating (84.4 to 80.2), nearly identical yards per attempt and completion percentage, and has thrown the same number of touchdowns as McNair (2) in a third of the attempts. It isn't as if McNair has been an unstoppable force at quarterback, and the stability of Boller health-wise might do the Ravens some good. Or this could be the Willis McGahee show against a team allowing 146 yards per game.
The Edge: Despite beliefs to the contrary, the Rams have to win a game at some point. If Frerotte can move the ball against Baltimore as he did against the Cardinals, the Ravens offense won't be able to keep up. But the Ravens play a grind-it-out game. If they can ride McGahee to an early lead and control the clock in the second half (where the Rams have struggled most), it can be another St. Louis loss.
Keep an eye on:
Samari Rolle & Tye Hill - Both teams have starting cornerbacks returning from injury, although Rolle is expected to play a larger part immediately than Hill. Rolle's return allows Corey Ivy to move back to nickel, where Brian Billick prefers him, while Hill will begin in the nickel. Both returns, however, will make a difference for their teams.
