Wow. Preventing the Bears from going 97 yards with under two minutes to play to put an exclamation point on an exciting Eagles win should be an easy task for this impressive Eagles defense, right? Not exactly.
The Birds' defense picked an awfully bad time to let an opponent reach the end zone. Brian Griese led the Bears on a quick jaunt down the field to take the game right out of Philly's hands. He connected with Muhsin Muhammad for the game winner with 9 seconds left. Game over.
For most of the game, the Bears kept Donovan McNabb and the Eagles out of the endzone. The frustration was visible. But then, in the fourth quarter, the Eagles found the end zone! It was about time. That should have been the game-winner.
Donovan McNabb hit Matt Schoebel open across the middle for the touchdown that put the Eagles up 16-12 with five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. McNabb showed quite a bit of emotion after the play, not something typical of number five. McNabb's accuracy may have again been suspect, but the key TD pass followed by an impressive scramble -- yes, scramble! -- for a first down late in the fourth overshadowed the misplaced passes.
We've become too accustomed to seeing a pouty McNabb on the sidelines late in a games. It was pretty awesome to see McNabb pumped up with excitement, even if it only lasted a few brief moments.
Omar Gaither's name was called repeatedly throughout and on the most crucial play of the game. Gaither made a stop on third and goal on about the 6 inch line, which kept Chicago to a field goal.
Fox analyst Brian Baldinger, who I enjoy for the most part, was giving props to Eagles punter Sav Rocca for keeping the ball out of Devin Hester's hands. But what Baldy didn't point out was the horrible punt in the third quarter which gave the Bears the ball at midfield, setting them up for the go-ahead field goal. Sav made up for it big time with a huge punt with two minutes remaining in the fourth, pinning the Bears inside their own 3 yard line.
You already know what happened after that.
