2008 Dunk Contest Watch

It's never too soon to think about this season's Dunk Contest. Especially not when Nick Young is actively campaigning for a spot, and Dwight Howard has already announced his plans to return.

Howard is a no-brainer. He's the breakout story of the season, which is a weird thing to say about someone who has already been an All-Star. Last year's crown should have been his, and both he and the league know it. Even if he doesn't pull out the basket-kissing dunk, Howard should be the favorite for '08.

Nick Young's scoring has earned him minutes in D.C., and he's taken advantage of this to showcase his dunking ability. (The video above brings you his latest.) Young's hardly the novelty Howard is, but he's got a flair for the dramatic and an outrageous sense of humor. Definitely deserving of a spot.

That leaves two more contestants. Gerald Green is the defending champ, but his career is sliding into oblivion. While trying to repeat might brighten his season a little, it would also highlight the meaningless of the Dunk Contest. A better choice might be Monta Ellis, a rising star still making progress. I'd also like to see Travis Outlaw show up, if only because of this in-game highlight.

Any other suggestions?
