Christmas is a time for families to come together. So what better time for Scott Sutton to bring his Oral Roberts Golden Eagles to The Golden Eagles pasted the Cowboys 74-59, taking the lead five minutes into play and never relinquishing it as the night moved on. Robert Jarvis led the winners with 21 points in their second Big 12 upset in as many years. It was Kansas in 2006, a bigger fish on paper, but some part of Scott had to take special satisfaction in knocking off his big brother. Their quest for a third straight NCAA bid looks good after they dominated the Cowboys. They took 32 free throws, forced 18 turnovers and were the better team in every phase of the game.
Elsewhere on the mid major hardcourts:
Miami (Ohio) 61, Illinois 58 (OT) - FanHouse's Michael David Smith covered this game from the Fighting Illini's viewpoint, they aren't heading anywhere good, but what about the RedHawks? If they can do well in the MAC, their wins over Illinois, Xavier and Mississippi State will serve them well in the selection committee but losses to Dayton and Wright State will balance them out. Tim Pollitz, 17 points and 13 rebounds last night, should play a role in determining their fate, as will trips to Lawrence and Cincinnati before the year is out.
East Tennessee State 76, Georgia 58 - Maybe the Bulldogs were jetlagged or maybe Courtney Pigram and the Buccaneers are just that good. They advanced in the Rainbow Classic behind 18 from Pigram and because they forced 16 first half turnovers against the SEC team. They'll play St. Mary's next in a mid major holiday feast.
Sam Houston State 61, UC Irvine 54 - The Allman Brothers sang about heading Southbound, I hope they stopped into the Southland conference when they made it. Sam Houston State is 10-0, Stephen F. Austin and Texas-Arlington are 8-1 and Central Arkansas is 9-3. Since there's no way their conference RPI will garner an at-large bid, the battle for the conference title should be fierce and worth your time.
