To get you ready for Week 16, FanHouse is previewing all 16 NFL games. Here is your Jets/Titans preview.2007 Records:
New York Jets: 3-11 (3rd in AFC East)
Tennessee Titans: 8-6 (3rd in AFC South)
Last Week:
Titans 26, Chiefs 17
Patriots 20, Jets 10
Why We Care: You can get a pretty good idea of the difference between the AFC East and the AFC South by the fact that both of these teams are third in their division. The Titans are playing for a potential playoff spot while the Jets are playing for 2008. Tennessee needs a little help to make the playoffs, but the most important part is to win both of their final two games.
When the Titans have the ball: Vince Young is playing his best football of the season as the weather gets colder. Last week he hooked up with Roydell Williams twice for touchdowns in a narrow win over the Chiefs, and Lendale White needs 40 yard to top 1,000 for the season, although his 3.8 yards per carry average isn't real pretty. Rookie David Harris has been a revelation at linebacker as he always finds his way to the ball, and the Jets secondary is pretty good, but the Jets defense hasn't been real impressive as a whole because they can't generate much of a pass rush.
When the Jets have the ball: The Jets are trying to create confusion about which quarterback will start on Sunday, but it appears that veteran Chad Pennington will be the man as Kellen Clemens tries to recover from a rib injury. Pennington is very heady, and is able to move the chains in a ball-control passing game. What Pennington can't do is challenge a team deep, and if the Jets fall behind, his lack of a NFL-caliber arm becomes very apparent. It's why this will probably be his last start as a Jet. Albert Haynesworth is expected to be healthy enough to play again for the Titans, but his hamstring has been an on-again, off-again injury that has plagued him for most of the second half of the season. If Haynesworth can play, it should eliminate the threat of Thomas Jones and Leon Washington in the running game. Also expect the Jets to try to use Brad Smith on a couple of trick plays, something that's given them some success as the former college quarterback is a triple threat.
The Edge: If the Browns lose to the Bengals, the Titans will know before they take the field for this 4:15 game. That would be just a touch more added motivation for a Titans team who has a lot more to play for than the Jets. Add in the clear talent advantage at quarterback on the defensive line and on the offensive line and this game should be the Titans to win. The Jets are more dangerous than you're average 3-11 team, but if Tennessee can't win this one, they don't deserve a playoff berth.
