We know that the big boss of the Miami Dolphins in 2008 will be Bill Parcells, that the general manager will be Jeff Ireland, and that the head coach will be someone other than Cam Cameron. But there's another name associated with the Dolphins, a guy who might be the closest thing they have to a household name even though he has played exactly one NFL game in the last two years. Running back Ricky Williams has all of six carries for 15 yards since 2005, but that doesn't mean he's finished with the Dolphins.
Williams' agent says Williams received a letter from the Dolphins dated Dec. 31 and signed by Parcells renewing Williams' contract for 2008. So does that mean Parcells wants Williams on the team?
Not necessarily. It could just mean Parcells wants to get a look at Williams, who is currently rehabbing a torn pectoral muscle, during the off-season. Or it could mean Parcells wants to let the next head coach, whoever he may be, decide whether Williams would be a good fit in his offense. Or it could mean Parcells wants to have the option of trading Williams.
Williams turns 31 in the off-season and is rusty and coming off an injury. That means it's probably less than a 50-50 shot that Williams sticks with the Dolphins. But Parcells at least hasn't closed the door on him.
