Kickers hardly ever make big money in free agency, and they're hardly ever traded. But Titans kicker Rob Bironas has the opportunity to be the exception this off-season.

Bironas, coming off a season in which he was the best kicker in football, becomes a restricted free agent in March. And he's just hired a new agent, meaning he thinks now is the time to get paid. So what's going to happen? Ordinarily the Titans would put a one-year, minimum-salary tender on Bironas and then try to work out a long-term deal. But with Bironas, that won't work because some other team will come along and snatch him away, even though they'd have to send the Titans a draft pick as compensation. Bironas' agent explains:
"On a normal kicker I think you probably just give him a one-year tender and then see what happens. But when you are talking about a guy who has made as many game-winning kicks as Rob has and is going to the Pro Bowl, I guess that would be a pretty dangerous position for the team, because anything can happen,'' said agent Harold Lewis
The Titans will probably try to work out a long-term deal with Bironas, but it's so rare that a kicker coming off a season this good becomes a free agent that there's no real precedent for what kind of contract he should expect. So how much is the best kicker in football worth? We're about to find out.
