Last week I wrote that with the Packers season over, it was time for Brett Favre to contemplate retirement. But unlike years past, Favre didn't think it would be a long drawn out affair, suggesting that he would only need a week or so to make up his mind. Well, it's been eight days, and ... well, Favre's still not sure about coming back in '08.
McCarthy and Brett Favre talked for almost two hours recently and then Wednesday afternoon for about half an hour in a downtown conference room after each accepted a national award at the site of Super Bowl XLII. Amid expectations that Favre would use his appearance to declare his intention to play an 18th season, the quarterback instead made it appear genuine that he really hasn't made up his mind. "I haven't decided yet," Favre said. "I'm just going to take a few more weeks."Okay, so nothing's changed when it comes to Favre making decisions about his future. But unlike previous retirement discussions, the media isn't breathlessly hanging on his every word, creating stories where there aren't any. And in case there's any confusion, that's a good thing.
Also, the Packers can afford to wait Favre out; backup Aaron Rodgers seems like he's ready to assume the starting job (something that wasn't clear a year ago), so even if Favre waits until May to quit, Green Bay will have a legit quarterback on the roster. Just better hope Rodgers doesn't go down.
