Vince Young may be a star in Nashville, but it's nothing like the way he gets treated back on campus at the University of Texas. After winning the Longhorns first national title in more than a generation, Young is finding that it's not easy to fit in as just another student now that he's back on campus working on finishing up his degree. When Young walked into his psychology class, the students gave him a standing ovation, leaving the professor (a UCLA grad) baffled, thinking the applause was for her. An opinion piece in the student paper The Daily Texan asked students to leave poor Vince alone and allow him to study instead of always hitting him up for autographs. The school considered giving Young a bodyguard to help him handle the crush of fans.
Yeah, Young isn't just another senior trying to get through a psych class. But give him credit for heading back to UT to finish up his degree--living up to a promise he made when he decided to leave early to turn pro. In Young's case, he obviously doesn't need the degree--he's already made enough money to last him a lifetime if he invests wisely--but he wants to tell kids to stay in school and get college degrees, an argument that's a lot harder to make if you don't have your own degree.
"It's not about the money and fame," Young said. "It's about education."
