If all of you baseball fans were worried that the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry might lose some of its luster now that George Steinbrenner's corpse has been removed from Yankee Stadium, fear not, for his baby boy Hank has gladly taken the reins. So far in Hank's short tenure at the helms of the Yankee clipper, he hasn't been one to keep his opinion to himself. So when it comes to his thoughts about the Red Sox and their fans, you didn't expect him to keep his mouth shut, did you?
Steinbrenner, apparently trying to emphasize that he has no fear of the Yankees' American League competition, has amped up the rivalry between the two teams, intentionally or not.Oh no he di'int!
"Red Sox Nation?" What a bunch of [expletive] that is," he said in an interview with The New York Times' Play magazine. "That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans.
"Go anywhere in America and you won't see Red Sox hats and jackets, you'll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We're going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order."
I don't know about you, but I love this kind of stuff, and so far this spring has been very promising for me. We've already got the Mets and Phillies trading barbs, the Mets and Nats are getting into it, and now Hank is adding fuel to the fire between the Yanks and Sawx. It's fantastic.
The only thing I don't get is why a New York team is involved in all of this. Since when did New Yorkers become loud and opinionated?
