It has been 17 years since Duke and North Carolina have met in the regular season finale ... and it determined the ACC regular season champion. On Saturday, the #1 Heels and #5 Blue Devils will step on the floor at Cameron Indoor Stadium with a win giving them that title.
So, in honor of that, let's take a look at some memorable season enders between these two.
1974 (UNC 96-Duke 92, OT): This may be the most memorable game in Tar Heels history. The Tar Heels were down 86-78 with just :17 left in regulation. The Heels forced two turnovers for easy points and hit a couple free throws to get within a bucket. After Duke's Pete Kramer missed two free throws, Walter Davis hit a 30-ft bank shot to send the game into overtime. In the OT, momentum carried UNC to the win.
1968 (Duke 87-UNC 86, 3OT): Sure, this was before most of you were born ... but this was a classic. Duke's Fred Lind, a guy who scored all of 21 points all season long, exploded for 16 points and 9 boards (he was only used because their All-American center Mike Lewis was in foul trouble). He even blocked the Tar Heels' game winning attempt in the third OT to secure the win. Lind was then carried to Duke's quad by students and fans.
1981 (Duke 66-UNC 65, OT): This may be one of the most significant games in the Mike Krzyzewski era. It was his first year and the Blue Devils were struggling. Two Sam Perkins' free throws game the Heels a 58-56 lead with just :02 left. Duke inbounded the ball; threw it to halfcourt; quickly called a timeout. They then inbounded it to senior Gene Banks (who wore a tuxedo and threw roses at the fans before the game) hit the jumper to send the game into overtime. Banks showed up again as he hit a put-back with :19 left to give Duke the upset over the #11 Tar Heels.
1984 (UNC 96-Duke 83, 2 OT): Michael Jordan's final home game. He needed a Matt Doherty jumper at the buzzer to force overtime. In the second OT, Jordan and Sam Perkins carried the Heels to the win. The win gave UNC the ACC's first undefeated conference season in a decade.
1998 (Duke 77-UNC 75): Duke freshman Elton Brand (who missed a lot of time with a broken foot) made an impact in this one. Trailing 64-47, Brand led the Blue Devils to a manic comeback as the #1 Blue Devils beat the #3 Tar Heels. The win gave the Blue Devils the ACC regular season championship and was Coach K's 500th career win.
2003 (UNC 82-Duke 79): This is the one time the shot at the buzzer didn't count. This game was most memorable for UNC coach Matt Doherty and Duke assistant Chris Collins getting into a fight ... it all came down to a Dahntay Jones halfcourt heave that would have tied the game. The shot, however, didn't count as the ball was still in Jones' hand when the buzzer sounded.
1991 (Duke 83-UNC 77): This is the last time that the regular season finale between the two determined the ACC regular season champion. Duke went to 11-3 ... a game over UNC for the title. UNC got it's revenge a week later with a 96-74 pummeling of the Blue Devils at the ACC tournament. Duke got the ultimate laugh by winning the National Championship.
2005 (UNC 75-Duke 73): #2 UNC was down by nine to the 6th-ranked Blue Devils with under three minutes left. The Tar Heels used their interior force of Sean May, Jawad Williams and Marvin Williams to pull the game out. The most memorable was a Marvin Williams rebound on a missed Raymond Felton free throw, which he put back and was fouled. The ensuing free throw put the Heels up by the final margin and giving Carolina a huge win that vaulted them to a national championship.
2006 (UNC 83-Duke 76): The top ranked Blue Devils were a juggernaut ... led by Player of the Year JJ Redick. It was senior night for Redick and Sheldon Williams ... but some freshman named Tyler Hansbrough would have none of that. Redick started hot, but ended up missing 15 of his final 16 shots. The game may be best known for ESPN's "Full Circle" coverage of the game where it was broadcast on several different channels and formats. Because of that, it is the most watched college basketball game in ESPN history.
2007 (UNC 86-Duke 72): The game was nondescript, but it will be forever known due to a Gerald Henderson elbow to Hansbrough's nose.
