Yesterday, the Texans released center Steve McKinney. He is rehabbing from an ACL surgery from early last season. After the trade for former Denver center Chris Myers, McKinney's contract was too expensive for being a backup. He was the first free agent signing for the Texans and wanted to be the first free agent signing for the team. On a very young Texans offense, he instantly was forced to be a leader on the offense. He was one of the few early Texans who really showed his personality to the fan base.
If you are a McKinney fan, an Aggie, a great American or are just interested in all things Houston Texans, I suggest that you listen to the multi-part interview he did this morning on Houston's 1560 The Game. He says how things went down, talks about the Texans and their history, and they variously ramble about random funny stuff (his buddy Raymond, floral design, David Carr's sissy gloves).
McKinney is supposed to be good to go by camp, but the Texans weren't comfortable relying on not having any healthy centers going into OTAs. This is partially why a younger Myers was signed.
McKinney is going to look at free agent options but would prefer to re-sign with the Texans given that he lives in Houston, has business ventures here and enjoys playing for the team. He says he is certain he will be back from his ACL injury and still has a desire to play.
McKinney is able to play both center and guard and is a good locker room guy. And according to his hunting buddy Raymond, he is a great American. I have no reason to disagree.
