The Bengals were actively looking to add a receiver to their roster once once they cut Chris Henry. They went a little off the board by going after Coastal Carolina's Jerome Simpson.
Simpson may be a bit of a reach. After all, guys like Limas Sweed, Malcolm Kelly and DeSean Jackson were still out there. This comes after head coach Marvin Lewis kept saying that the team didn't want to be cute and reach for a guy. Many draftniks had Simpson going in the fourth or fifth round.
He is a bit similar to Chris Henry as he's very athletic, long arms and great hands. However, he lacks the discipline that NFL receivers must have in route running and getting off the line. That's not great for a team that has seemed to get frustrated when timing issues disrupted the offense.
Needless to say, the fans here in Cincinnati are a little bent about what just happened.
Offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski:
"There are things about him that are rare. Granted, he does come form a smalls chool, but when you look at the smaller schools, you look for productivty. He haad the productivity of 44 touchdowns. Then you look at the measurables. At the combine, he had the longest long jump of anyone at the combine, he had the longest arms and the biggest hands at the combine. His speed and jumps were at the upper level of the receivers. So you say he's a workout wonder, well, he's not a workout wonder because of his productivity. There's always the difference, you look at the productivity of some guys who are workout wonders and they don't match. His matches."
