Newly signed Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman spoke with Mike Doocy from Fox 4 in Dallas, and after dispensing with the pleasantries, Doocy got down to the interesting stuff: safety Roy Williams (around the 4:35 mark).
Doocy: What do you see as [Williams'] future with this football team, and are you worried about Roy Williams right now, in terms of his confidence...?Perhaps in an effort to will Williams back to the facilities to participate in "voluntary" workouts, Newman added: "I don't think he's a liability ... but he needs to keep his weight down, and get back in the weight room and get stronger -- he knows what he has to do."
Newman: The funny thing is, coming into his rookie year, Roy had, I think, five picks, and showed he could cover. He's the same guy, I think, he just sometimes gets, uh, a kind of a deer-in-headlights type of a reaction in some plays... Not everybody is going to have a perfect season. He had a bad season last year, in terms of coverage.
Newman was very supportive of Williams as he made these comments, but the point remains: Williams has to improve in coverage. Dropping a few pounds is a good start, but more importantly, losing the "deer-in-headlights type of reactions" could really help get him back on track.
