Carl Edwards is back in victory lane in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
Edwards -- who couldn't catch Jimmie Johnson in last week's Allstate 400 at the Brickyard -- finally captured his fourth victory of the 2008 season in Sunday's Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 after being oh-so-close for the last three races on the Sprint Cup schedule.
Edwards has finished second twice in the past three races (Indianapolis and Daytona) and had the car to beat late in the going at Chicagoland before blowing a tire and breaking his front splitter.
To capture the win, Edwards led 53 of 200 laps with 36 of those coming before the red flag for a brief rain shower with 69 laps to go. On his final run, Edwards stretched his fuel tank for 34 laps to outlast the rest of the field as a number of drivers -- including point leader Kyle Busch who wound up 35th -- ran out of fuel coming to the checkered flag.
Tony Stewart finished second, Jimmie Johnson third, Kevin Harvick fourth and David Ragan fifth. Harvick came back from a spin on lap 1 to secure the Top-5 finish.
In what was probably the more comical part of the race, Hendrick Motorsports teammates Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. battled to the checkered flag while coasting after they both ran out of fuel in Pocono's final corner. Gordon squeaked by Earnhardt to take 10th-place.
Jamie McMurray scored his second Top-10 in two weeks with a 9th-place finish, and Scott Riggs earned his best of finish of 2008 with a 12th-place run for his No. 66 Haas-CNC Chevrolet.
The win is Edwards' second career victory at Pocono Raceway and 11th of his career.
