Rick Ankiel Decided Not to Risk It

With the Cardinals struggling to stay in the pennant race of late (they've fallen six games behind the Cubs, though are still within striking distance of the Wild Card), Rick Ankiel's latest injury has certainly come at an inopportune time. He's been playing sparingly since their four-game series against MIlwaukee and hasn't started at all since July 26th, being limited to a few pinch-hitting cameos since then.

Last night his injury almost cost the team as he singled into right field, but couldn't advance to second as the Phillie outfielders bobbled the ball around because he's not supposed to be running with his abdominal strain. It was a one-run game at the time and Ankiel represented the go-ahead run. The play ended up not costing the Cards when the next batter was hit by a pitch, but it's clear that in his current state, Ankiel isn't much help to his team.

The good news is that Ankiel thinks he'll be ready by Thursday against the Dodgers. The problem is that the Cardinals have two games before then and now they're without Chris Duncan for the rest of the year and finding people that can hit the ball is becomind a critical problem for the Red Birds at the time of year that every game is a little more important than the game before.
