The Tigers may be eight games in back of a playoff spot, but they're not yet ready to throw in the towel: Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated reports that the team signed free agent pitcher Freddy Garcia to a minor league deal. Starting pitching has been a weakness for Detroit for most of the season, but if Garcia can impress over the next couple of weeks, he may be able to provide the rotation with a shot in the arm for the stretch run.Garcia hasn't pitched in the majors since June of last year when he went down with a torn labrum. After spending most of this season recovering, Garcia worked out for roughly 15 teams last week. The Tigers obviously liked what they saw, although truth be told this is as close to a zero-risk move as you can make: the minor league deal extends only through the end of the season.
If Garcia fails to impress, the team can wash their hands of him this winter. But on the other hand, if Garcia shows flashes of his old ability, the Tigers will also have the inside track for retaining his services when he hits the open market once again this winter.
But we're getting ahead of ourselves: for now, Garcia will report to Single-A Lakeland, and he'll likely need a handful of starts at Double-A and Triple-A before the Tigers bring him up to the show. Given the timing, there's a very good chance he won't make his triumphant return until after rosters expand on Sept. 1.
