Colin Montgomerie Is Begging You, Nick Faldo, Put Him on the Ryder Cup Team

Colin Montgomerie had his worst round in a major at last week's PGA Championship, firing an 84 on Friday, which firmly cemented his status well south of the cut line. Instead of teeing it up in subsequent events to earn his way onto the European Ryder Cup team, he's got a different plan: sit out for two weeks and just hope that captain Nick Faldo names him to the squad.

Don't worry, Nick -- Monty's not just lying around whingeing, he's practicin'.

My desire to play in the Ryder Cup is greater than ever -- as I have shown in the past and in my schedule which has been geared toward qualifying," Montgomerie said Friday on his Web site. ...

Montgomerie said he would use these two weeks to "put in some serious practice time" ahead of the Johnnie Walker Championship that starts Aug. 28 at Gleneagles in Scotland -- his last chance to impress Faldo.

Seems like an odd strategy, but Montgomerie, like Ryder Cup teammate Sergio Garcia, is a completely different player in match play/alternating shot/best ball events than he is in stroke play. He's arguably one of the best European Ryder Cuppers over the last 10-12 years, and even though he's been struggling this season, the biennial event is something entirely different.

Of course, it wouldn't surprise me if Faldo left Monty off the final roster just because he's vindictive like that.
