Today in Monaco the draw for the Group Stages of the 2008-09 UEFA Champions League was held. As per usual it produced some potential mouth-watering affairs and some 'meh' games.

Some of the matches of interest include:

* Defending champion Manchester United v. Celtic in Group E.
* Liverpool playing star Fernando Torres old club Athlètico Madrid in Group D. (In fact, of all the top-seeded teams, Liverpool might have the toughest draw with PSV Eindhoven and Marseille.)
* Arsenal traveling to Turkey to play Fenerbaçhe in Group G.
* Real Madrid v. Juventus (back after a one-year absence) in Group H.
* Lyon v. Bayern Munich (also back after one-year absence) in Group F.
* Bordeaux v. CFR Cluj (umm...not really.) in Group A.

Overall, an interesting draw because more fancied teams like Athletico and Fiorentina were in the same line as minnows like Bate Borisov and Anorthosis Famagusta.

Off the top of my head the only American that might play in the competition is Jozy Altidore of Villareal.

Matches begin on Sept. 16.
