Titans 17, Jaguars 10: A Great Defense Can Make Up For a Lot

Tennessee beat Jacksonville in a key AFC South opener. Here's my look at who were the heroes and goats of the season opener.

Stars Of The Game

1. Titans Defensive Line

It's hard to understate how dominant this group still is. Albert Haynesworth and Kyle Vanden Bosch get most of the credit, but Tony Brown, Justin Jones and Jevon Kearse all helped out as the Titans completely shut down one of the best running games in the league. Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew were held to 31 yards combined as the Titans forced Jacksonville to give up the running game. They also combined for six of the Titans seven sacks.

2. Titans RB Chris Johnson

In a game where most offensive stars were swallowed up by the defenses, Johnson was the best skill player on the field. The rookie showed outstanding speed plus more power than you would expect. Johnson had five plays of 10+ yards, while the rest of the Titans team had four.

3. Jaguars returner Brian Witherspoon

The Jaguars got nothing going offensively all day, but thanks to Witherspoon, they were in the game until the final seconds. Witherspoon, an undrafted rookie free agent, averaged 41.3 yards on three kick returns (including a 51-yarder and a 49-yarder) and had a 29-yard punt return as well.

4. Titans CB Courtland Finnegan

Shutting down the Jaguars wideouts might not be the toughest job Finegan will face all year, but Finegan's two interceptions were crucial to the Titans' win.

Goats Of The Game

1. Jaguars defensive line

Jacksonville retooled its defensive line during the offseason, trading away Marcus Stroud and drafting Derrick Harvey and Quentin Groves. The result was only one sack (by John Henderson) and a front four that struggled to contain Johnson all day.

2. Jaguars WRs Reggie Williams, Dennis Northcutt and Troy Williamson

Matt Jones had a solid day, but the rest of the Jaguars wideouts were miserable. The trio listed above combined for six catches for 47 yards. Unless the Jaguars get some surprising development from someone

3. Titans QB Vince Young

Young left the game with a sprained left knee, but before he left, he threw two interceptions, pouted on the sidelines and generally struggled to move the team. Young has a horrendous group of receivers which doesn't help, but it's hard at this point to blame anything on his youth. Young made some bad decisions (especially on his first interception) and struggled with inaccuracy, as usual. We don't know how long he'll be out, but it's hard to say that the Titans playoff chances will take a big hit by turning to Kerry Collins for a short period of time.
