The situation: Georgia Tech is down 20-17 against Virginia Tech with 2:24 left. GT has two timeouts. It's fourth and seven. Paul Johnson goes for it, Josh Nesbitt is sacked, and the announcers question his decision.

Johnson's response to that:

"I think you've got to try to win the game," he said.

"The guys who do the game, they're morons...I don't worry about what they say."

Survey says... correct! Best case scenario for Georgia Tech is a three-and-out sandwiched between two punts. The amount of time this would take:
  • Two punts: probably around 20 seconds.
  • Three running plays: probably another 20 seconds.
  • One forty second clock running, running, running: 40 seconds.
Georgia Tech's triple-option flexbone attack would get the ball back with about a minute left and no timeouts, or wouldn't get the ball back at all.

BONUS moron action: apparently there was also skepticism when Johnson went for two with nine minutes left. The score? 17-15, Virginia Tech.
