All Eyes Are on Titans, but Good Luck With That Wide Receiver Thing

Tennessee Titans: possible No. 1 team by default, sitting on their laurels.

After the Cowboys, Redskins and Giants all stunningly fell to muddle up the NFC East, attention now turns to the only undefeated team left, over in Tennessee. You know, the same team that could really use a clear-cut top wideout to give their offense a Hulk Hogan-style big boot.

While trying to figure out who really is the top team in this parity-filled NFL season, one of the few knocks people will have on Tennessee is the lack of a passing threat that matches up to their crushing defense (11.2 points per game allowed) and the dynamic rushing combo of rookie Chris Johnson and LenDale White. Oh yeah, and that 35-year-old journeyman that's currently their quarterback might not work wonders all year.

But according to the Nashville City Paper, it doesn't look like GM Mike Reinfeldt will make a serious swing for any big-name receivers before the trading deadline today:
The Titans at the present time don't appear to be in serious negotiations regarding acquiring any players.

There had been talk of the team potentially having interest in Detroit Lions wide receiver Roy Williams, but Williams told Lions beat writers that he had been told he was not being shopped.

Though the Titans' interest in Williams is not completely a dead issue, with the deadline coming, it would appear to be a very long shot of happening. The winless Lions still apparently have not decided for certain if they will move Williams or not.

Granted, there are definitely a couple of other teams out there where someone like Williams or T.J. Houshmandzadeh (unrestricted free agent next spring) would make a big difference. That includes underrated Tampa Bay and maybe even Buffalo (imagine trying to defend a combo of Williams or T.J. and Lee Evans, yikes). But the Titans are clearly the team that can benefit most if they want to be a serious contender.

UPDATE: Roy Williams goes to the Cowboys. Despite the steep price, Dallas proves it's more interested in being a Super Bowl contender than Tennessee is right now. You could make a case that the Titans aren't quite ready for that next step, but with the defense they have, I think they are... but they opted to sit tight.

We'll see what the Titans offense can do when it has to match firepower with the rejuvenated Colts in a couple of weeks on Monday Night Football. Get ready to see more of Justin Gage (he of the papier-mache knee), Justin McCareins (Mr. Drop City, come on down!) and the rest of the mish-mosh gang.

Then again, the 2000 Ravens had the Trent Dilfer-to-Qadry Ismail connection. So maybe it will all turn out just fine in the end for Tennessee.
