World light heavyweight champion Joe Calzaghe defeated Roy Jones Jr. by unanimous decision tonight at Madison Square Garden in the signature performance of Calzaghe's career -- and possibly the last fight for both boxers.
Jones knocked Calzaghe down in the first round and looked like the Jones of old for about the first five minutes. But in the third round Calzaghe finally found his hand speed again, and for the rest of the fight he simply dominated. By midway through the fight he had opened an ugly gash over Jones' left eye, and for the rest of the fight Jones' face was a bloody mess. It was a one-sided fight; Calzaghe destroyed Jones.
Calzaghe is widely considered one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world, and nothing that happened tonight could change that. The 39-year-old Jones was was considered the best boxer in the world for several years but is now well past his prime. That was never more clear than tonight.
FanHouse live blogged the fight and gave it to Calzaghe, 117-110. All three judges scored it 118-109.
Calzaghe said after the fight that he would consider retiring, but that he hasn't made up his mind for sure. If he's done, Calzaghe will retire with a record to 46-0. Jones also said that retiring is possible. If he's finished, Jones now has a record of 52-5.
