After presenting CC Sabathia with a six-year, $140 million offer three weeks ago, the Yankees have been greeted by crickets. It doesn't appear that any other team will top the offer, certainly not in this economy, but Sabathia is stalling nonetheless, apparently hoping another West Coast team will at least try.The Giants took the bait yesterday, but their offer is believed to be one year and $30 million shy of New York's. That puts them ahead of Milwaukee, who offered five years and $100 million at the outset, but it'd still require Sabathia to leave a ton of money on the table.
Personally, I think Sabathia should sign with the Giants. They're an NL team on the West Coast, which is exactly what he wanted, and they also happen to play in one of the biggest pitcher's parks in the game. And really, what can you do with $140 million that you can't do with $110 million?
Unfortunately, players tend to make these types of decisions with their pocketbook and not their heartstrings, so I wouldn't be surprised if Sabathia ultimately signs with the Yankees. But just in case, Brian Cashman is setting up his contingency plan: Cashman has already met with Scott Boras, who represents Derek Lowe, and he flew to Texas yesterday to meet with Mark Teixeira. When he's done, he'll meet one more time with Sabathia on Monday, but if he doesn't get an answer soon, they may be forced to look elsewhere, especially now that the Braves are close to signing A.J. Burnett.
