Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson: The Draft Pick Not Even Matt Millen Could Screw Up

When Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson entered the NFL draft last year, everyone said he was the one absolute can't-miss player in the Class of 2007.

Of course, can't-miss prospects usually find a way to miss when they're drafted by former Lions president Matt Millen. But Johnson is proving himself to be the draft pick that even Millen couldn't screw up.

Johnson showed off the kind of speed that 240-pound men just aren't supposed to have on an absolutely masterful 70-yard touchdown catch today against the Vikings. It was his ninth touchdown catch this season and put him over 1,000 yards, which is absolutely amazing when you consider that the guys passing to him this year have been Jon Kitna, Dan Orlovsky and Daunte Culpepper. No other Lions receiver has even 350 yards, and, amazingly, there's not a single other Lion with even two touchdown catches.

I firmly believe that if Johnson ever spends a full season playing with a good quarterback in a competent offense, he's going to break Jerry Rice's NFL record of 1,848 receiving yards in a season. I just hope the Lions give him the chance some day.
