Long Beach State has had a lot of great coaches during its history, most notably Jerry Tarkanian, Seth Greenberg, Tex Winter and Lute Olson. While they all had great success for the 49ers, they never seemed to stick around very long. Now there are rumblings that current coach Dan Monson could be looking for a new gig next season, according to the Long Beach Press Telegram. The 49ers do appear much improved this season, and they aren't getting blown out as much as they did last year, but it's not like Long Beach State is dominating the Big West. But still, Doug Krikorian speculates that Monson will take one of the offers from one of the "majors" who will come calling at the end of the season.
Although, he should be worried more about having his program finish in the top half of the conference before looking to that next big gig.
This seems nothing more than typical Long Beach bluster. As if Krikorian is as myopic as their fans. There aren't any quotes from Monson, and you wouldn't expect there to be. What is he going to say at this point? But it's hard to imagine that there will be many "big-time" programs that will be looking at Monson, nor are there many better mid-major jobs out there.
Do you think that any major program would trust Monson after his failure in Minnesota? He's far removed from his Gonzaga gig, and some consider Mark Few the true architect of that program. In other words, don't expect Arizona to be calling any time soon.
Monson seems better suited for a mid-major program, and he's in a pretty good spot in Long Beach. The school has a decent facility, the Big West doesn't have a dominant player like Gonzaga in the WCC so there is a chance to build a good program out there. He's bringing in the talent and could be living large. If you ever hear Tarkanian tell it, he wishes he never left Long Beach.
But then again, it is Long Beach. Nobody would blame him if he wanted to leave and he wouldn't be the first. Monson should, however, remember his failures at Minnesota and be grateful for the opportunity he was given at Long Beach. Further, he should at least get Long Beach to the tournament before he goes courting other schools. I mean, he's not Brad Holland.
