Following the abrupt retirement of Lute Olson in late October, Arizona lost their entire 2009 recruiting class. Jeff Withey, a top-10 center recruit in 2008, asked to be released from his scholarship after Olson retired. Olson and all of the coaches who recruited him were gone. He didn't want to play for an interim coach and then have to wait for another coach to come in and find out if the style suits his game.

Arizona Athletic Director Jim Livengood refused to release Withey, citing concerns over the state of the Arizona basketball team's Academic Progress Rate (APR), in releasing a player in mid-semester. Of course, no one was exactly clear on what Livengood meant by that or why it would be bad for the Arizona APR. Withey would not be able to transfer and start the one year waiting period as a transfer without being in good academic standing.

Well, Withey did not back down. He continued going to classes, but left the Arizona basketball team and filed an appeal with the NCAA. This week, Livengood granted Withey's release from Arizona. Not that the reason was any clearer. Livengood cited student privacy laws and simply said that it was "in the best interests of everyone."

Withey will finish out his semester at Arizona next week and transfer. His most likely destinations appear to be Kansas or Texas -- two schools that recruited him before he signed with Arizona. The Wildcats basketball program will remain a mess almost reaching Indiana levels only without an NCAA investigation.
