Evidently, the injury is to his ankle and came as a result of a Shea Weber shot during the Wings' first penalty kill of the game around 7:30 of the first. Lidstrom successfully played the remainder of the first period, but by the start of the second, the adrenaline had worn off. He made it only one shift before going to the lockerroom for the remainder of the game.
The ankle is swollen, but X-rays showed no breaks. Still, Lidstrom's status for tonight's game in Denver is in doubt. It will depend on how he feels following today's morning skate, but given the team's usual caution with injuries, I'm guessing they'll play it safe and put Chris Chelios or Derek Meech into the lineup rather than rush Nick back.
The Wings didn't do so hot last season when Lidstrom was out of the lineup, so the obvious hope around Hockeytown is that he'll be back soon. For Lidstrom, the unfortunate part of this on a personal level is he had just recently begun ramping up his play after a slow start. That he has been knocked out of the lineup by perhaps his closest rival for the Norris Trophy is just a little too symbolic for my taste.
