Who says the only impact Americans have on the Barclay's Premier League is as club owners? Sunday afternoon in London, Texas-born Clint Dempsey dealt a severe blow to über-club Chelsea's title ambitions. The U.S. international forward (and part time rapper) scored a pair of goals, including a header in the 90th minute to give Fulham a 2-2 draw with its West London rivals. More importantly, it knocked Chelsea four points behind first place Liverpool (5-1 winners at Bolton earlier in the day) going into the New Year. It also pulled the Cottagers to a respectable ninth in the 20-team table and extended their unbeaten run to nine matches.
Dempsey, who for all intents and purposes is the only Yank field player currently in the English top flight, scored both goals from close range in the box. Inside of 10 minutes he got on the end of a Simon Davies free-kick, and flicked a a back heel with his back nearly facing the goal to beat Chelsea keeper Petr Cech and the last-gasp clearance by John Obi Mikel.
Nearly 80 minutes later Dempsey again struck -- this time after Frank Lampard had scored a pair of goals to give the Blues a 2-1 advantage. Again Dempsey latched onto a Davies delivery -- this time from the right corner -- and looped a header by Cech and the unmarked far post.
The U.S. national team's 2009 calendar is more packed than a Hollywood star on a press junket. Dempsey's 2008 form was indifferent and inconsistent, despite a few goals here and there. For American fans maybe this is the spark Dempsey needs to get going when he dons the U.S. whites and blues in upcoming 2010 World Cup qualifiers and June's Confederations Cup.
U.S. fans would certainly like to see him celebrate like he did Sunday at Craven Cottage, where he appeared to crack open an imaginary beer on the treads of his cleats.
