FanHouse is keeping hockey fans updated on the happenings at the 2009 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships in Ottawa.

They may have fallen short of the 20-goal margin they needed to overtake Canada in goal differential, but Team USA did get the job done Tuesday against Kazakhstan.

The Americans rolled to a 12-0 win over the horribly overmatched Kazaks, and moved their record to 3-0-0 during pool play at the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championships. The win sets up a showdown against Team Canada at Scotiabank Place for the top spot in Group A, which carries with it a bye through the quarterfinals.

While it wouldn't guarantee either team the gold, or a medal of any color, the winner will have a three-in-four chance at a medal, and they wouldn't have to worry about playing a quarterfinal game Friday.

In Tuesday's rout, Team USA outshot Kazakhstan 61-10

This is the most anticipated game of the tournament so far, and would only be eclipsed should the two meet again
at some point in the medal round. Aaron Palushaj (St. Louis) and Colin Wilson (Nashville) each scored two goals, and goaltender Thomas McCollum (Detroit) pitched a quiet ten-save shutout.

More importantly, it doesn't appear that any American players suffered any notable injuries. That's the best news, as both teams are healthy heading into Wednesday night's showdown.

While it will be an intense atmosphere and it should be a fun game, it doesn't mean as much as a rematch would mean. This one simply decides a quarterfinal bye, which is nice, but doesn't guarantee a medal. If they meet in the semifinals or the gold-medal match, much more will be at stake, and the atmosphere will be even crazier.

That said, I hope Team USA wipes the ice with them.

In the other Group A game Tuesday, the Czech Republic pasted Germany 6-0. The Czechs get the third medal round spot out of the group if they get even a tie against Kazakhstan Wednesday.

In Group B, Russia moved to 3-0-0 with an 8-1 win over Slovakia. That sets up a Wednesday showdown with Sweden for the top seed out of that group. Also, Finland beat Latvia 5-1. The winner of Finland's game with Slovakia Wednesday will move into the quarterfinals Friday.
