Could the man that Liverpool fans affectionately call "God" be on his way to the Chicago Fire? Numerous Internet reports are floating around that the one and only Robbie Fowler could wash up on the banks of Lake Michigan. These reports have the veteran forward targeting a salary of around $9,000 per week -- paltry by major U.S. sport and European standards, but big bucks for MLS. Should the former England International complete the move he would join former Mexico International Cuauhtemoc Blanco and former U.S. International Brian McBride. On the plus side it would give the Fire three marquee players to market to three different types of fans. On the downside, all players would be over the age of 33.
As for Fowler, he probably has something left in the tank and has proven to be a goal scorer wherever he goes given that he sees the field. If he's committed to the Fire -- and not, say, scarfing down Pizzeria Uno -- he would be a boost to young Fire players like Chris Rolfe and Justin Mapp.
Bringing Fowler to MLS wouldn't do much to dispel the notion that the league can serve as a nice, gentle retirement home for European stars, giving them another option for a late career paycheck besides the Middle East of Japan. Fowler, though, doesn't exactly need the money since he's made a fortune in real estate. At the very least he could inject some much needed fun into the league and gives me another excuse to post a link to this old chestnut, which let's face it, never gets old.
