Yes, I was one of the doubters about Minnesota. I knew they were better than last year's team, and definitely would be a force next year. This year, however, I was not prepared to buy into Tubby Smith's squad. Sure they had a 15-1 record, but their non-con SOS was way below 250th. Their best win had been over an exhausted Louisville team at a neutral site. They had only played two road games to date. A one-point win over Colorado State and a three-point escape over Iowa. They looked like a lot of young, decent teams that would end up on the NCAA Tournament bubble come March.
Then came Thursday night.
The Golden Gophers went to Wisconsin and knocked off the Badgers 78-74 in overtime. It was only the fourth time in eight seasons under Wisconsin Coach Bo Ryan that the Badgers had lost a home Big Ten game. It has been the toughest place for any Big Ten team to win on the road.
Wisconsin had beaten Minnesota 13 of the last 14 meetings. Minnesota's last win had been in 2005. They had not won in Wisconsin since 1994.
Minnesota was down 12 with under five minutes left in the game. Wisconsin had controlled the game most of the way. Finally, Minnesota went to a full-court press and to the shock of everyone, it completely disrupted the Badgers. The Golden Gophers not only got the turnovers, they made the baskets and Lawrence Westbrook drained a three with 2 seconds left to tie the game at 62 and send it to overtime.
Once in overtime, it was all Minnesota. Wisconsin didn't score a basket until nearly four minutes into the OT. They made the final score look close, but Minnesota made their free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.
