After Firing Herm Edwards, Chiefs in Talks With Mike Shanahan

The Kansas City Chiefs fired head coach Herm Edwards today, and they could be close to bringing in a big name to replace him: Mike Shanahan.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that the Chiefs are negotiating with Shanahan, the two-time Super Bowl-winning coach of the Denver Broncos who was fired last month.

However, the Chiefs would be violating the NFL's Rooney Rule if they hire Shanahan without first interviewing a minority candidate. It is not clear whether the Chiefs secretly interviewed any minority candidates before firing Edwards.

If Shanahan does, in fact, get the job, it would be a major statement from owner Clark Hunt and new Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli that they want a proven commodity who can turn the Chiefs into winners right away. And it would make next year's Chiefs-Broncos games a lot more interesting.

UPDATE: Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that Mortensen is wrong.
