The Lions coaching staff is coming together nicely. Gone are Rod Marinelli, Joe Barry and Jim Colletto. In are Jim Schwartz, Gunther Cunningham, and Scott Linehan.

The Rams fired Linehan as their head coach last September after the team stumbled to an 0-4 start. By all accounts he was dreadful, amassing a 11-25 record in just over two seasons. Schwartz hiring him to coordinate the Lions' offense might seem like more of same in Detroit. But here's the thing: just because a guy is a complete and utter failure as a head coach doesn't mean he's not a good coordinator with a firm grasp on Xs and Os.

Cam Cameron was 1-15 with the Dolphins last year before playing a huge role in Joe Flacco's development as Baltimore's offensive coordinator. And Dick LeBeau managed 12 wins in 45 games while with the Bengals earlier this decade. He's also the architect of the zone blitz and is currently responsible for the best defense on the planet.

And Linehan, before sullying his good name with the Rams, was a very good coordinator. Working with the Vikings from 2002-04, he was credited with Daunte Culpepper's emergence, and that three-year stretch ultimately got him a head coaching gig. But Lions fans shouldn't mistake Linehan's inability to manage a 53-man roster with his football knowledge. Today's NFL head coach is just as much corporate CEO as football tactician. And the guys who can juggle those responsibilities ultimately are successful.

But that's no longer Linehan's problem; he can just get back to coaching. All that other stuff -- Schwartz can worry about that.
