As the NHL All-Star Break continues, keep up with FanHouse's coverage of hockey's unofficial midway point.Plenty of exciting goals throughout the first half of the NHL season, and here are the top five that stood out above the rest:
5) Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals -- December 26, 2008: It wouldn't be a list of best goals if it didn't contain at least one from Alex Ovechkin. In a game in late December against Buffalo, Ovechkin took a loose puck coast-to-coast, undressed a defender, and ripped a shot behind Patrick Lalime while in the process of falling down. Vintage Ovechkin. Check it out right here.
4) Jonathan Toews, Chicago Blackhawks -- December 6, 2008: The Chicago Blackhawks are loaded with young talent, and that obviously includes second-year player Jonathan Toews. In a game against the Detroit Red Wings, the 19-year-old center split a pair of Detroit defenders and then proceeded to deke Ty Conklin out of his pads for a highlight reel goal. See for yourself.
3) Johan Franzen, Detroit Red Wings -- November 25, 2008: It was a rough week for Montreal defenseman Ryan O'Byrne, as just a few nights after he accidentally shot a puck into his own net, he was guilty of a giveaway in the neutral zone to Detroit's Johan Franzen leading to one of the season's best goals. See Franzen's ridiculous moves right here.
2) Bobby Ryan, Anaheim Ducks -- January 7, 2009: After being the No.2 overall pick in the 2005 draft, one spot behind Sidney Crosby, it's taken Bobby Ryan a few years to make an impact in the NHL. Ducks fans, and the rest of the league, are finding out that he's been worth the wait. In a four-on-four situation against the Kings in early January, Ryan capped off his first career hat trick in spectacular fashion with this spin-o-rama goal.
1) Blake Wheeler, Boston Bruins -- December 20, 2008: The Boston Bruins are the class of the Eastern Conference at the league's unofficial midway point, due in large part to the performances of guys like Blake Wheeler. In a game against St. Louis, Wheeler scored a pair of goals in the first five minutes, including this masterpiece to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead. Count the Blues players surrounding him as he closes in on the net.
