College basketball has a pretty crowded postseason. Sixty-five teams make the NCAA men's tournament and an additional 32 find themselves in the NIT. Well, it's about to get more crowded.Enter the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, which apparently debuts this year and tacks on an additional 16 teams that head to the postseason. Maybe your school will be lucky enough.
The field will be determined after the official announcements of the two existing tournaments. Criteria for selection will include, but are not limited to, win-loss record, strength of schedule, strength of conference, and final 10 games. The selection committee consists of former head coaches and CollegeInsider.com and from the quotes that the site has pulled for its media section, people are pretty stoked about the idea.
Eligible Teams:
Participating teams must finish the regular season with a winning record against division I opponents. Teams whose conferences have less than fifty-percent (50%) of their teams participating in the NCAA and NIT tournaments will be given higher priority for selection into the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
It's a bit of a downer though, because the NIT is already considered, if I may quote the great David Thompson, to be a "loser's tournament." One wouldn't think that the CI tourney will have much more appeal.
On the other hand, it's not the BCS, so, really, it's just another example of how college basketball grasps the ever difficult concept of "not making fans angry."
