Jon Garland Signs With Diamondbacks

After a long offseason searching for the right job offer, Jon Garland has finally signed a contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. According to Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic, Garland has agreed to a one-year contract with an option for 2010. Piecoro stated the deal is likely in the $6-$8 million range.

Garland made $12 million pitching for the Los Angeles Angels last season, and was offered arbitration. He surely would have gained at least a small raise during the process, but he declined.

Garland should be a perfect third starter in the NL West. He's not going to blow anyone away, as his career high in strikeouts is 115. He's a workhorse, though, routinely working over 190 innings pitched -- he has for the past seven years -- including four times with more than 208. His ERA usually hovers a bit above the league average, but is rarely overly impressive. He won't walk a ton of guys, but he does give up lots of hits.

One upside Garland has in Arizona is that he's never pitched in the national league before. There will be a large crop of hitters who haven't seen him much, and when that is the case it's usually advantageous for the pitcher. He's also not going to be counted on atop the rotation, as Brandon Webb and Dan Haren compose Arizona's 1-2 punch.

Doug Davis and Max Scherzer will likely comprise the bottom of the rotation. Yusmeiro Petit will add depth in case of injury. All things considered, as long as Arizona isn't expecting the Jon Garland from 2005 to show up in camp, this is a mutually beneficial signing.
