Every season since 2000-2001, Jarome Iginla has led the Calgary Flames in goals. In many of those seasons, it hasn't really been close. While he's a wonderful player and all, this isn't necessarily a good thing. You could argue that Calgary's lack of balance has played a role in their inability to advance past the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs more than once in Iginla's career. With that in mind, general manager Darryl Sutter found Iginla some help last summer. He acquired Mike Cammalleri from the Los Angeles Kings, hoping he had found someone who could take all the heat off Iginla and Daymond Langkow.
Cammalleri took the team goal-scoring lead into the All-Star break, and he did nothing Wednesday night to relinquish it. In fact, he added to it. A hat trick against the Buffalo Sabres gave Cammalleri 25 goals on the season. Included in that is an amazing burst of 11 goals in seven games. He actually has six more goals than Iginla does, which is impressive given Iginla's eight-year run atop the team scoring charts.
Calgary is 15-4-3 going back to December 5. They're averaging nearly four goals per game in that span, which is pretty impressive for a Calgary team that's rarely been known for their goal-scoring.
Iginla hasn't stopped being an important player on this team. He still leads them in assists and points, he has 19 goals, and he is still the captain. But Cammalleri has been a great find for this team. It surely wasn't expected that he would lead the team in goal scoring, but there was no question all along that he had the talent.
The Flames play 20 of their last 35 games on the road. Normally, I'd see a potential problem, but they do have an 11-point lead in the Northwest. Chances are they won't catch Detroit or San Jose for a top-two seed, but Calgary would have to suffer a Vancouver-esque collapse to miss out on the third seed that will come with winning the Northwest. No one else in the division has shown any ability to play to Calgary's level for more than a game or two at a time.
